A startup founder wanted to build a web app to manage client bookings. He used an AI coding assistant (a tool that writes software code automatically) to build almost the entire thing in a couple of weeks. He tested it, it worked, he launched.
About a month in, someone discovered that by tweaking the web address slightly, you could access any other user's booking details — name, contact info, appointment history. The door was open to anyone who knew where to look.
This is called a security vulnerability — basically, a gap in the app that lets people in where they shouldn't be. The AI had built the features correctly, but hadn't been asked to think about security. It didn't volunteer that information. It just built what it was told.
The startup had to take the app offline, hire a developer to audit and fix the code, notify affected users, and deal with the reputational damage of a data breach before they'd even found their footing.
The lesson: AI-generated code can look perfectly fine and still have serious gaps. If you're building anything that handles customer data — bookings, payments, personal information — it needs a real developer's eyes on it before it goes live. There's no shortcut there.
